MONT BLANC: A MASTER CLASS IN SUFFERING
Amsterdam border control gave me that special look when I mentioned climbing Mont Blanc, the universal expression for "good luck, you absolute muppet."
A passionate, experienced and disciplined data geek who has managed a wide range of projects within the academic, public, private and third sectors. American born, but based in Scotland since 1999, I have sought through my work to deliver elegant and valuable projects to clients and the community. Educated to PhD level I bring thoughtfulness into my leadership, development and delivery roles. I was a child that grew up with the first generation of computers in my home and have been coding since my parents purchased a TRS-80 in 1995. I have seen and been a part of the development of languages from Basic to TypeScript.
I'm apparently the type of person who, given £1,000,000, would spin out ten large-scale projects and eat ramen noodles in the hope of precipitating change. Whether it's scaling up museum dinosaur kits to office-sized installations or diving deep into assistive communication technology, I seem to have a talent for turning simple ideas into wonderfully complex odysseys. What started as a weekend project to build a WhatsApp clone supporting Bliss Symbols somehow became a four-month journey through font creation, keyboard development, and React integration. There's always something brewing—from developing precision weather forecasting applications for Sub-Saharan farmers to pondering the ethics of AI-generated content.
I have those evenings where I get itchy feet about not doing enough to save the world, which usually leads to me applying some creative thinking (often aided by a beer or two to help the creative juices flow) to tackle whatever impossible challenge has caught my attention.
As a burgeoning photographic documentarian, I've been steadily building my camera gear and skills over the past few years, aiming to capture shots that I'd actually want to hang on a wall. Photography serves as the perfect companion to my adventures—something to work on while exploring, always with an eye for that next compelling shot. It's become more than just another hobby; it's a way of documenting the stories I encounter along the way.
When it comes to travel, I'm more interested in embracing the absolutely bizarre corners of the world than snapping selfies in front of the Eiffel Tower or complaining about overpriced gelato in Venice. What separates the truly adventurous souls from the Instagram tourists is simple: the willingness to seek out experiences that can't be captured in a standard holiday snap. I believe the best stories come from the unexpected detours and the places that make you question everything you thought you knew.
My writing spans everything from technical deep-dives into complex projects to random curiosities that capture my imagination. I enjoy exploring how technology can create positive social impact, whether that's through applications that empower smallholder farmers or tools that make communication more accessible. The range of subjects is vast, spanning from odd curiosity to full-scale societal change, but there's always a thread connecting them: the belief that thoughtful technology can make the world a bit better.
I maintain an "impossible list" of goals that keeps me moving forward, always balancing analytical rigor with playful ambition. After all, life's too short not to occasionally wonder how much it would cost to get your own dinosaur skeleton and then figure out how to build one yourself.
Currently working on my next impossible project while based in Scotland, camera in hand, ready for the next adventure.
